Important Notice

Effective January 1,2007, the DTC will no longer be leasing the DSL Modem to the customer. The modem becomes the property of the customer. The maintenance and upkeep of the modem now becomes the responsibility of the customer. The DTC will honor for a ninety (90) day period the modem the customer currently possesses. Refer to the Internet Installation & Service Agreement for further details. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Business Office at 746-1500 or custserv@delhitel.com.

The current technology offered by Delhi Telephone Company is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) which is an “always on connection” (no annoying waiting for a connection) that allows simultaneous voice and data connections on the same line (you may no longer require the second “computer” line).

DSL is a distance sensitive technology; that is, the further you are from a DTC central or remote office, the lower the maximum achievable data rate will be. DTC is continuously upgrading it’s facilities in an effort to reach more customers in our telephone area with DSL service. Again, because it is a distance sensitive technology, DSL is not available everywhere, please call a customer service representative for more information.

How DSL Works:

If you don't know already, your telephone line is made up of a pair of copper wires. The conversations that take place on these wires, only takes up a fraction of their capability. DSL harnesses this available room on your telephone line for transferring data, while not impacting the performance/quality of your voice conversations.

There are many different versions of DSL. ADSL (Asymmetric DSL) is probably the most common type of DSL. In the instance of ADSL, the downstream path is three to for times faster that the upstream path. In other words, you the customer can "look at" or "download" from the internet three to four times faster than you can "put" or "upload" to the internet.

To make all of this work, there are two physical pieces of physical equipment required. At the subscriber's end, exists a DSL Modem. This Modem allows the signals coming over the telephone line to be "decoded" or "translated" to a format that the everyday personal computer can understand. The second piece of equipment exists at one of Delhi Telephone Company's Central Offices known as a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer). Put very simply, the DSLAM takes all the connections from the subscriber, and pools them into a single high-capacity connection to the internet.

This is where one of the main distinctions between ADSL users and cable-modem users occurs. Because cable-modem users generally share a network loop that can span through a neighborhood, each user that is added means lowering the maximum speed for existing users on that node. ADSL provides a dedicated connection between the subscriber and the DSLAM meaning there will be no performance degradation until the single, high-capacity connection to the internet is full.
